• Do you want to use your steel knowledge and technical expertise to shape innovative and efficient solutions? As a senior concept engineer at Concept Engineering, you'll contribute to sustainable improvements that determine the future of Tata Steel IJmuiden.
  
  At Concept Engineering, you are the one who can distill complex technical challenges down to their core. You ask the right questions to determine whether a project is truly necessary, or if there might be a smarter alternative. You work closely with users to clearly understand their needs and ensure the project has a well-defined and achievable scope from the very beginning.
  
  With your strong network (universities, Tata Steel Limited, suppliers, and other knowledge institutions) you know how to tap into the right expertise when needed. By leveraging this network effectively, you gain access to specialized insights that help you think in concepts, challenge stakeholders, and translate ideas into well-founded business cases.
  
  As a senior concept engineer at Tata Steel...
• You'll investigate whether a project is necessary or if there are alternative solutions. By asking critical questions, you uncover and understand the root cause of the problem, ensuring that efforts are focused on the right solution.
• You'll utilize your external network to gather specialized knowledge from professionals, suppliers, and academic institutions who can provide insights and solutions for complex technical challenges.
• You'll develop fundamental engineering documentation, such as Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Heat & Material Balances (HMBs), and layout plans.
• You'll perform simulations and calculations in, for example, Aspen/Hysys and FluidFlow, and evaluate alternatives to make the most well-founded recommendation for the next project phase.
• You'll collaborate with various disciplines within the organization to align project goals and technical feasibility, while gathering insights from later project phases to continuously improve future concept designs.

You're technically skilled, analytically strong, and you enjoy conceptual thinking. You combine your in-depth steel knowledge with a practical approach to solving complex issues. You communicate easily at different levels and like to build bridges between technology and business. You work in a structured manner and are results-oriented. You're strong at networking and know exactly where to find the knowledge needed for your projects. Additionally, you have:

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a technical field.
• At least 10 years of experience as an engineer in an operational or engineering environment in the steel industry.
• A large internal and external network to collect information needed to define the best option for a given problem.
• Strong conceptual thinking skills and the ability to connect technical and business perspectives.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to challenge assumptions and drive decisions.
• A structured, systematic, and results-driven approach to problem-solving.

Jouw werkomgeving

The Concept Engineering Department at Tata Steel IJmuiden plays a key role in shaping investment decisions for capital projects. Our mission is to lead the  process for and ensure optimal project selection that aligns with our Clean, Green and Circular strategy.

We focus on identifying and validating opportunities, translating them into well-defined projects with clear scopes and solid business cases. In close collaboration with users, technical experts, and external knowledge partners (e.g. universities, TSL), we explore multiple alternatives and select the most value-adding solution.

Our team acts as a strategic think tank within the engineering organization. We are conceptual thinkers, facilitators, and challengers—engineers who combine creativity with technical and business insight. By asking the right questions and thinking beyond conventional solutions, we lay the foundation for successful project execution.

We work in two key phases:

•    FEL 1 Appraise opportunity: Define the problem, assess feasibility, and identify viable alternatives.
•    FEL2A Select scope: Evaluate those alternatives and select the best one based on criteria like cost, technical fit, and sustainability.

This way of working ensures that each investment contributes to Tata Steel’s transformation goals and long-term performance.
